With Madge (Sheila Reid) now living la vida solo after the passing of her beloved husband Mel (the late Geoffrey Hutchings), things quickly go from bad to worse for her as the legacy of Mel Harvey’s business dealings catches up with her. After managing to track her down to the caravan site where she’s been living,  Mick (Steve Pemberton) and Janice (Siobhan Finneran) find themselves caught up in trying to rescue Madge,  get her back on her feet and work out what her next move will be.

Donald (Kenny Ireland) and Jaqueline (Janine Duvitski) are back but all is not quite as well as it seems with them.  Despite his efforts to play it down, it seems  that Donald’s health may be about to cause a bit of concern. While it doesn’t prevent them from indulging in their passion for a bit of  fruity fun it soon becomes clear that it may be a bit more serious than first expected.

Gavin (Hugh Sachs) is in residence poolside at The Solana but this year without Troy (Paul Bazeley). Troy’s had to remain in the UK to take care of his dying father so Gavin has brought his employee Kenneth (Tony Maudsley) with him on an all expenses paid trip. What sounded like a good idea quickly becomes a nightmare as Kenneth’s insatiable appetite for men and food begins to grate on Gavin’s nerves.

New to The Solana are Sam (Shelley Longworth) and Natalie (Kathryn Drysdale), two “lovely” young ladies from the north of England. With Natalie on the receiving end of constant attention from Mateo (Jake Canuso), amongst others, best friend Sam is less than happy. It all goes downhill after a night at a disco and Sam settles down to a holiday of playing second fiddle to her more attractive pal.

The Solana has a new bartender too in the form of Les (Tim Healey).  Les is delighted, not only to have been offered the job by Janey (Chrissy Rock) but also to find out that she has no objections to him coming to work dressed as a woman. As he and Mateo battle it out for control of the poolside bar, Les’s son Liam (Adam Gillen) enjoys his first taste of holiday romance as he tries to woo Natalie. All would be perfect for Lesley’s gullible son if only he could get past a very protective Sam.

And Noreen (Elsie Kelly) is back too but this time she’s travelling with her daughter, Pauline (Selina Griffiths). Having just emerged from an unhappy marriage and 14 years living in the Middle East, Pauline is less than pleased with her mother’s choice of holiday destination. After a good start, the pressure of a holiday with Noreen takes its toll and recovering alcoholic Pauline seeks comfort at the bar.

Benidorm is a new comedy from Derren Litten the co-writer (with Catherine Tate) of The Catherine Tate Show.  Featuring a strong ensemble cast of some of the finest talent in the UK:  Jacqueline (Janine Duvitski) and Donald (Kenny Ireland)  are a couple of enthusiastic and elderly swingers.  Kate (Abigail Cruttenden) and Martin Weedon (Nicholas Burns) are going through a rough patch during their third year of marriage.  Geoff Maltby (Johnny Vegas) known as ‘The Oracle’ because of his computer-like knowledge of trivial facts and figures and his mother (Elsie Kelly).  Gavin (Hugh Sachs) and Troy (Paul Bazely) are on their first break away together after setting up a successful hair salon.  And finally there are The Garvey’s; a Yorkshire family on their first holiday abroad. Janice (Siobhan Finneran) and Mick (Steve Pemberton) are with their teenage daughter Chantelle (Hannah Hobley), eight year old son, Michael (Oliver Stokes), and Janice’s mother – the sun-worshipping, chain-smoking Madge (Sheila Reid), with a bad word for everyone!

The new six-part series will be Paul Jackson’s first commission since returning to ITV as Director of Entertainment and Comedy.  Jackson says:

“Benidorm is the holiday experience we have all had where you spend 14 days avoiding the lairy couple who sat behind you on the coach. Derren has created a fantastic range of characters and the sheer quality of his writing has attracted a really exciting cast who will bring to life the joys and the horrors of the all inclusive package holiday.”
